Safeway’s Proposed Approach to Stormwater Management at the New Pinehurst Safeway

Here is additional information from Safeway regarding the proposed Pinehurst Safeway store redesign:

Our approach to stormwater management at the new Pinehurst Safeway will handle all stormwater from both the parking lot and the roof using sustainable, earth-wise strategies.

For the parking lot, pervious pavement has been used in tandem with the City’s landscape planter design specifications so that all of the stormwater will infiltrate into the soil onsite, recharging the groundwater. For the roof, runoff will be routed through Stormwater Planters (per City specifications) located on the east and south sides of the building, infiltrating entirely onsite and again recharging the groundwater. The stormwater planters act to absorb water runoff and slowly release it into the ground.

It is the goal of this design approach to eliminate the need for a traditional detention vault. With these strategies, the site significantly exceeds the LEED requirements for Stormwater Design points in both Quantity Control (Sustainable Sites Credit 6.1) and Quality Control (Sustainable Sites Credit 6.2).
