Eritrean Kidisti Selassie Orthodox Tewahedo Church in Pinehurst

Thank you to Michael Neguse and Tsegay Berhe of Eritrean Kidisti Selassie Orthodox Tewahedo Church for graciously inviting me to their monthly community dinner and meeting last night. There were over 150 community members, adults and children, at the dinner.

Community members enjoyed traditional Eritrean fare (all vegetarian since it is Lent). After dinner a few outside speakers including King County Deputy Prosecutor, Mike Hogan, spoke. Mike specializes in prosecution of hate crimes, an unfortunately too common issue for new immigrants such as those in the Eritrean community. I spoke briefly about the Pinehurst neighborhood and about our upcoming Pinehurstfest event. I was impressed by the strength of community and the warmth of the reception given to all of the outside speakers last night. It is a very vibrant community.

We have invited Michael and Tsegay to attend our May 4th Pinehurst community meeting and for them to speak a bit about their community and what we can do to help and be more involved with them. One significant way that we can help, and that they will speak more about on May 4th, is for interested folks to volunteer as youth tutors in the HOPE Eritrean Social Services youth tutoring program.

Great to have such a wonderful immigrant community in Pinehurst. This church has gone through so much and emerged stronger.

If you think their socail get-togethers are great, you should visit their service on Sunday morning.

I finally found out about this church today. I was getting gas at the 7-11 on NE 125th & 15th NE & their youth group was holding a car wash across the street at the Chevron station. I wasn’t able to afford a carwash, but I gave the kids a donation. I really enjoyed the spunk & competitiveness of the boys in their group. Their antics & enthusiasm gave a smile as I drove home.

    Hello
I’d like to let you know that there are 4 young men hanging out in the back of your church building smoking and drinking the alcohol they stole from Safeway grocery store. They did this around 1 or2 am. Today thru did until 430am.
You may want to leave lights on to deter them away.
Having a front gate may help.

  • Anong – please talk to someone at the church directly. Also, call the cops if you know about theft, drunkenness, or loitering. You’re not likely to get action taken by posting a comment on this blog.
