Pinehurst’s AS #1 recognized for sustained improvement in WASL scores

Ten schools from Seattle Public Schools, including Pinehurst’s AS #1, were recognized at an awards luncheon on Saturday, September 26 for being part of the top 5 percent of the highest-improving schools in the state in student achievement. PDK-WA, in collaboration with the Center for Educational Effectiveness, recognized the schools – along with 99 other schools across the state – for sustained improvement as measured by seven years of WASL test scores.

Yay! We're an AS1 family and are really proud of our achievement. But even more so, we're proud that we're an experiential-learning school with strong community ties (in Pinehurst and in the larger community), that our kids learn social justice along with math, and that our teachers don't "teach to the test" but rather to each student's individual needs and strengths.
Thanks for highlighting our awesome little school!

I too am an AS#1 parent who's happy to see our "hidden gem" receive much deserved recognition! If there are parents out there who are looking for a school that prioritizes experiential learning and meeting kids where they're at, AS#1 still has space available for this year. Don't hesitate to check out our website! 🙂

Truly & Sarah – We would love to know more about AS #1. Please feel free to send updates and information that can be shared on the blog.

Well, right now despite enrollment that is so low that we've lost 1 full teacher & 1 art teacher, Enrollment Services (and I use the term services loosely here) is turning kids away from enrollment in AS1.
Despite repeat occurances of this last year by Enrollment Services and reporting it to the school board nothing has changed this year.
Please ask your readers to contact the school board and ask them what they are personally going to do about giving our local neighborhood school a fair shake, even if it is "alternative".
