For a bit of background, “Smart Meters” generally refers to Advanced Metering which Seattle City Light is currently investigating. There was a Forum at the Northgate Community Center in August with about 60 attendees. I wasn’t able to attend but I reached out to City Light for more info on that forum as well as the plan for the neighborhood. And here’s some more info from them:

On the “smart” meters. There are no benefits. They are increasingly referring to them as AMIs because they have been getting such bad press. House fires, increase in radiation exposure , surveillance. They will be able track all your appliance usage with the capability at some point to sell that information. Huge Increases in electric bill charges in some cases 30% and higher. Will cost close to $400 million to switch over and a loss of jobs. No more meter readers. They have some pilot programs in Renton and the High Point neighborhood. Some people experiencing headaches. Birds not coming to bird feeders.
