Kids’ Art in Pinehurst Pocket Park

This month’s art in Pinehurst Pocket Park is a lovely scene, drawn by eight year old Ella at this year’s Pinehurstfest. How many animals did she include? For an up-close look, it is in the kiosk at NE 117th St & 19th Ave NE, beautifying our neighborhood park. Thanks, Ella!

If you would like to submit your child’s artwork (or yours!) for the Pocket Park, please email nancy@pinehurstseattle.org.

Neighborhood Street Fund Applications

Neighborhood Street Fund (NSF) funds community-proposed transportation improvement projects in the City’s Right of Way.

This cycle will be a little different from previous cycles. SDOT has improved the process in the following ways:

  • Application workshops: They will host workshops in various communities through November 19 to increase accessibility and facilitate neighborhood collaboration. Check out the website for dates and times.
  • Community sorting: in January and February, we’ll hold meetings where communities can rank proposed projects according to wants and needs.
  • Public voting: once projects have been prioritized to top projects per council district, the public will vote on the projects they would most like to see constructed in their neighborhoods.

This cycle, your project could be selected. Click here to fill out your application online. The application period will close November 19. Check the  website for upcoming application workshops near you.

Read the FAQ and Application Dos and Don’ts before you get started.

Mobile Incubator in Lake City Mini Park

Community members might notice a bright orange 1957 Shasta camper trailer in the Lake City Mini Park November 19-21 3-7 pm. The Mobile Incubator is a mobile office where artists, designers, performers, writers and other cultural entrepreneurs can come to seek business advice for their creative ventures.

The Mobile Incubator is itself a work of art, featuring creative contributions from a variety of artists in its design, including a 1,000+ piece wooden mosaic. Since its inaugural voyage from Seattle, the mobile office has traveled over 25,000 miles across 42 states.

Lucas Spivey, BFA/MBA hybrid, will host open office hours out of The Mobile Incubator. “My goal is to teach business principles to artists, but I encourage everyone to interact on their terms because I feel that people learn best when they’re comfortable and excited,” said Spivey.

These events are funded by the Arts in Parks program. The Arts in Parks program supports new and established community festivals, art happenings and music concerts that enliven Seattle parks. These arts and culture offerings celebrate diversity, build community connections and energize parks while connecting with under-served communities. Arts in Parks is an initiative of Seattle Parks and Recreation and the Office of Arts and Culture.

2018 Seattle Public Safety Survey

This year’s public safety survey, administered by Seattle University, is available here.

The survey began in 2015 as part of an evaluation of the Seattle Police Department’s neighborhood-specific policing plans.

Last year, about 6,500 people responded to questions about their fear of crime, confidence in Seattle police, whether officers treated people fairly, whether there are enough police in their neighborhood and other public-safety issues.

The surveys help create the Micro-Community Policing Plans. Pinehurst east of 15th Ave NE is in the Lake City plan, while Pinehurst west of 15th Ave NE is in the Northgate plan.

The Tony Lee Grand Opening Ceremony

Friday October 19th, 2018, 10:00 AM

The Low Income Housing Institute invites you to attend the groundbreaking ceremony for The Tony Lee on Friday, October 19th, at 2820 NE 127th St., Seattle.  Tours will begin at 10:00am and a short program will start at 11:00am.

Located in the Lake City Urban Village on the former site of Fire Station 39, The Tony Lee is a 6-story mixed-use project with 70 units affordable to those making 30% to 60% of the King County Area Median Income. The unit mix includes 15 studios, 25 one-bedrooms, 25 two-bedrooms and 5 three-bedroom apartments. The first floor includes a four-classroom preschool operated by the Refugee Women’s Alliance (ReWA).  A roof top deck, resident garden planters and solar array are features of this sustainable building designed by Runberg Architecture Group.  Walsh Construction Co. is the General Contractor overseeing construction.

The building is named in honor of Tony Lee, a civil rights advocate and champion for low income families, people of color, refugees and immigrants. He was a founding member of the Asian-Pacific Islander Coalition of Washington and the Equity in Education Coalition. He worked as an attorney at Evergreen Legal Services, and on advocacy for the Washington Association of Churches, the Catholic Archdiocese and Solid Ground. He was awarded the Goldmark Award for exceptional leadership in social justice from the Washington Legal Foundation.

Speakers at the grand opening include: Mayor Jenny Durkan; King County Councilmember Larry Gossett,; Mahnaz Eshetu, ReWA Executive Director; and LIHI Executive Director Sharon Lee.

The City of Seattle conveyed the City-owned land to LIHI. The Office of Housing provided funding for the project, including 2009 Housing Levy and federal HOME funds.  Umpqua Bank provided construction and permanent financing. Boston Capital is the Low Income Housing Tax Credit equity investor. Total project cost for residential and preschool space was $22,950,000.

ReWA is an approved Seattle Preschool Program provider, certified by the Seattle Department of Education and Early Learning.  Up to 80 children will be enrolled in high quality early learning opportunities.

The community organizations and community residents of Lake City neighborhoods have offered their support throughout the design, permitting and construction process.  Lake City Future First and Lake City Neighborhood Alliance, and the 33 member organizations they represent, have been vital to this achievement.

Come celebrate with us! To RSVP or for info, contact Aaron at AaronL@LIHI.org.

North Precinct Advisory Council Minutes for October 2018

This month’s guest speaker was Sgt. Richard O’Neill, Vice-President of SPOG, the Seattle Police Offiers’ Guild. You may have heard that recently negotiations for a new SPD contract were completed and are awaiting City Council vote. It will be retroactive to 2015 when the prior contract expired. SPD officers have been working without a contract and without raises since 2015. They, and firefighters, are not allowed to go on strike since they’re so critical for public safety.

For more SPOG info and other news from the North Precinct, read the minutes here.
