Jackson Park Trail

I finally learned how to convert .pdf files to .jpg. Here is the likely Jackson Park Trail route. Also, I have spoken with Tim Gallagher, Director of Seattle Parks and Recreation, since this last post. And, Tim is optimistic that a full perimeter trail can be built and that it will have a modest (under $1 M) cost.

There is more on Jackson Park Trail here and here.

snow day in Pinehurst!

Looking for something to do this weekend?

Seattle Center Winterfest 2008 – Winter Solstice Fire Festival

Celebrate the lunar changes of the season at a spectacular Seattle Center Winterfest premiere filled with flames and fiery drama.

Words, music and movement interact with several organically shaped steel structures set on fire for the evening. They will illuminate the darkness and transform the International Fountain and Fisher Pavilion Lawn into stunning celestial wonders.

The festivities begin with a performance by Orbis and Solaris in recognition of the Winter Solstice, the day that marks the return of the sun. Throughout the evening, you’ll marvel at the glowing, fiery sculptures as local artists offer additional fire performances in the International Fountain.

Seattle Garbage Collection Postponed Due to Icy Road Conditions

(this is from Seattle Public Utilities)

Friday Collections to be Picked Up Saturday

SEATTLE — Single-family residential garbage, yard waste and recycling collection has been delayed in Seattle for today, Thursday, December 18, due dangerous road conditions. Most business and apartment services will be collected on schedule.

City collection contractors will attempt to service missed customers tomorrow, Friday, if road conditions improve. Customers missed today should leave their containers out tomorrow. If materials are not collected tomorrow, then customers should bring in their containers until their regular collection day next week.

Friday, December 19 garbage, recycling, and yard waste collections will also be postponed one day, to be collected on Saturday, December 20.

Customers whose collections have been delayed by a week will be permitted to set out double their normal amount of garbage at no additional charge. When setting out extra waste, customers are encouraged to place perishable food items in their collection containers and set bagged non-perishable items next to the containers.

Seattle Public Utilities’ (SPU) web site (www.seattle.gov/util) and call center (206) 684-3000 will be updated with the most current collection information. Customers can also sign-up for e-mail service alerts at www.seattle.gov/lists.

What we are not getting at the Pinehurst Safeway

I was cleaning out a closet and found this image from the last time Safeway proposed redeveloping the Pinehurst store.

The images of the draft current design are available to view at the Department of Planning and Development. If I get an official electronic version of the new designs before the next Design Review meeting, I will post them to the blog. Safeway has done an amazing job of responding to community requests and feedback. (One of the few criticisms of the current design is that it does not include bioswales in the parking lot. If bioswales are not included, the thought is that they need to use permeable pavement or increase the trees and vegetation in the parking area.) When the new store opens, it will set a higher standard for Safeway stores in Seattle. And, we are way better off than we would have been had the design below been built.

It’s the season….

We took the kids downtown yesterday to see the lights and decorations and to savor a bit of urban holiday season energy.

Today, we are hanging out at home romping in the snow and baking. I just made these minibundt cakes from this NYT recipe. One tip, though: do not try to eat this for breakfast. It really does have a ton of alcohol, even after baking. I made the recipe with Bushmills and our kitchen now smells like an Irish pub.

Smart Growth: New York City grew, but traffic did not

From today’s New York Times here. Increased density with good public transit is not necessarily bad growth.
