Some big news

Safeway has confirmed that the new Pinehurst Safeway will be LEED silver certified.

While neighbors have asked for LEED certification since our initial discussions with Safeway, Safeway previously could only commit to the store being LEED silver certifiable. Certification costs significantly more than simply building the store to LEED standards. This decision and the entire Pinehurst Safeway project represents a significant investment by Safeway in our community.

More information on LEED can be found here.

This will definitely increase the likelihood that I will support this store with my business! Great news!

  • IF: they had hired an architect/designer that is knowledgeable about LID construction, and BSD infiltration-based stormwater runoff management from this century,THEN: the capital they saved would have more than offest the cost of LEED-Platinum certification + a green parking lot, approaches, and pedestrian-friendly green roofs throughout the entire development.
When will American architects, engineers, and developers get with the program? It is not necessary to re-invvent the wheel; but it may require investing a little time into learning something new.
This is apparently only one more instance of lazy desgins, by professionals who have not learned anything new since they graduated from college, in the 1970’s and 80’s.
You get what you ask for, and if you ask set-in-his-ways design/build professional, you get whatever he/she already knows how to do: archaic and obsolete BMPs dating back to the 1970’s.
good luck with that plan, Pinehurst.
