PARK(ing) Day!

Help imagine and build a greener, more livable city by being a part of PARK(ing) Day on September 19th 2008.

PARK(ing) day started in San Francisco with the artist collective REBAR. It’s motivated by the realization that a metered parking space is a short-term lease of public land, and doesn’t necessarily need to be used for storage of a personal vehicle. Instead, on PARK(ing) Day, parking spaces all over the world are transformed by organizations and neighbors into temporary public parks. Last year over 200 parks were created in fifty cities around the world, including Seattle.

IF YOU’D LIKE TO PARTICIPATE AND ARE PART OF AN ORGANIZATION: Go here to read more and fill out this form.

IF YOU’D LIKE TO PARTICIPATE AND ARE AN INDIVIDUAL: If you are an individual and want to take part, email ellie@feetfirst.info with your name, email, phone number, the neighborhood or location you would like your PARK(ing) spot to be in, and whether you can organize a space yourself or simply want to participate. We’ll take it from there.

THEN COME TO THE FEET FIRST PARK(ing) DAY WORKSHOP! Come to the Feet First PARK(ing) Day workshop on August 13th to learn more about creative ideas for your PARK(ing) spot, resources, permitting, and to nail down other specifics like location.

PARK(ing) Day workshop – August 13th 6pm to 7:30 pm – Triad Urban Center – 701 3rd Ave -Seattle, WA 98104 – Questions: 206.652.2310

Background: The Trust for Public Lands has taken the project on nationally, and Feet First is working with TPL and the Seattle Parks Foundation to mobilize community organizations, businesses and residents to participate here in Seattle. Park(ing) Day is not only a great chance to support a greener and more livable city, it’s a great chance to connect with your local community one curious onlooker at a time. A park(ing) spot park is a whole lot of fun and a true conversation starter, in the best meaning of those words.
