Northgate Fifth Ave NE Traffic Changes

Before I scare everybody too much, I should add to this that these changes are apparently only temporary.  They’re going to be in place for the next 40 days or so during the construction period.

SDOT is making street improvements on Fifth Avenue NE in the Northgate neighborhood, including new stamped concrete crosswalks along all three sides of the intersection of Fifth and NE 112th Street (one block north of Northgate Way).  To relieve pressure from traffic overflow in this busy shopping area, vehicles exiting the “Northgate North” shopping center parking garage on NE 112th Street will now be able to head eastbound on NE 112th.  Once on NE 112th, left turns to northbound Fifth will continue to be prohibited, but right turns to southbound Fifth will be permitted.  As of 5 p.m. Friday, June 11th, signs will direct traffic in this new configuration.

To remind drivers northbound on Fifth Avenue approaching NE 112th that they cannot turn left, crews will also place an electronic messaging sign on Fifth Ave NE, south of Northgate Way.

To further reduce construction impacts to shoppers and businesses, crews will not work on SDOT’s Northgate, Fifth Ave NE Project on weekends.  Beginning Monday, June 14th, work hours will be 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Crews have now completed paving work on the outside curb lanes of north- and southbound Fifth Avenue, and completed the crosswalk for NE 112th.

Street Closures/Restrictions Summary

  • Right turn from eastbound NE 112th St onto southbound Fifth Ave NE now allowed
  • No left turn from eastbound NE 112th St onto northbound Fifth Ave NE
  • No left turn from northbound Fifth Ave NE onto westbound NE 112th St
  • Fifth Ave NE reduced to one lane in each direction between NE 113th St and Northgate Way

NE 115th has been hit really hard by this construction. Drivers have been turning from 5th then westbound onto NE 115th to head west This area was cul-de-saced years ago so drivers are only getting frustrated and taking it out by turning around in inappropriate places and speeding back the other way. A real nightmare for us. Wish folks would read signs.
