Seattle Neighborhood Greenways – in Pinehurst?

Neighborhood Greenways initiative is striving to create roadways that safely connect community services and amenities.  The hope is for efficient traffic and fewer accidents, increased local economic activity and real estate values, more fitness opportunities resulting in better public health, reduction in CO2 emissions, an increase in native habitat and a more pleasant and beautiful street.

Do you have a Pinehurst street in mind that would benefit from traffic calming, bike lanes, etc? Here is a website that brings together a lot of information about working towards a solution:

http://neighborhoodgreenwayssea.wordpress.com/

There are photos of streets in other cities and countries, there’s information about funding a project, and there are design guidelines.

If you’re interested in bringing the initiative to Pinehurst, there’s a meet-up on May 3rd, 6-8 PM, at Capital Hill Library, 425-Harvard Ave E.. RSVP is requested, which you can dohere as well as get more information about the meet-up agenda.

We don’t need traffic calming (congestion), nor do we need bike lanes (there are already traffic laws for bicyclists and drivers to share the road). What we need is to fix the infrastructure we have and vote our clueless mayor out of office. Seattle has enough parks that do not get maintained as they should. More greenways will just make nice areas for the drug addicts and drunks to congregate so those of us who care can pick up their litter and refuse. You guys are going to turn Seattle into a bust of a city like Detroit if you don’t get it together and figure out that your little pet projects are really not good for the overall success of our cities and neighborhoods.

Watch it buster, I’m from Detroit! 🙂 Out of the ashes wonderful things are happening there – organic farms growing fresh produce for the inner city, affordable studios for artists, etc. But I digress.

Yes, Seattle has a lot of big-city problems. I’m interested to know what you think will fix the infrastructure. Seattleites can’t even agree on that – more/wider roads or light rail? Who’s right? Who’s wrong?

I suppose we all have ‘little pet projects’ (did I hear a snide tone in your use of that phrase? can we all be civil?) and it’s hard to say which are good for overall success, if we can even agree on what ‘success’ means. To some, limiting population growth and making cities smaller would be success. But not everyone would agree with that. A difficult subject….
