Thank you to Safeway for donating popsicles for the Pinehurst Summer Social! ![]() Learn more at http://www.paintout.org/.
We need volunteers to help with the Pinehurst Summer Social on Saturday, August 9th:
We could also use coolers to store ice cream. E-mail or phone me (366-9472) if you would like to help.
Both of my kids attended co-op preschools that are part of the North Seattle Community College Co-op preschool program. We all had a very positive experience and the kids were socially ready to start kindergarten when they went. Teacher Marianne (in the photo above) was one of our favorite teachers. She currently teaches a class at Victory Heights and also teaches the Meadowbrook Fives class at Meadowbrook. The Safe Walks Google Group is a bit cumbersome to read. So, I set up a Safe Walks blog. Check it out and feel free to pass on any thoughts that you have. I value feedback.
Here are some articles on the project:
PARK(ing) day started in San Francisco with the artist collective REBAR. It’s motivated by the realization that a metered parking space is a short-term lease of public land, and doesn’t necessarily need to be used for storage of a personal vehicle. Instead, on PARK(ing) Day, parking spaces all over the world are transformed by organizations and neighbors into temporary public parks. Last year over 200 parks were created in fifty cities around the world, including Seattle. IF YOU’D LIKE TO PARTICIPATE AND ARE PART OF AN ORGANIZATION: Go here to read more and fill out this form. IF YOU’D LIKE TO PARTICIPATE AND ARE AN INDIVIDUAL: If you are an individual and want to take part, email ellie@feetfirst.info with your name, email, phone number, the neighborhood or location you would like your PARK(ing) spot to be in, and whether you can organize a space yourself or simply want to participate. We’ll take it from there. THEN COME TO THE FEET FIRST PARK(ing) DAY WORKSHOP! Come to the Feet First PARK(ing) Day workshop on August 13th to learn more about creative ideas for your PARK(ing) spot, resources, permitting, and to nail down other specifics like location. PARK(ing) Day workshop – August 13th 6pm to 7:30 pm – Triad Urban Center – 701 3rd Ave -Seattle, WA 98104 – Questions: 206.652.2310 Background: The Trust for Public Lands has taken the project on nationally, and Feet First is working with TPL and the Seattle Parks Foundation to mobilize community organizations, businesses and residents to participate here in Seattle. Park(ing) Day is not only a great chance to support a greener and more livable city, it’s a great chance to connect with your local community one curious onlooker at a time. A park(ing) spot park is a whole lot of fun and a true conversation starter, in the best meaning of those words. For pictures, more information, and more background, go to www.tpl.org/parkingday (esp. check out “videos and photos from past PARK(ing) day events), or to http://www.parkingday.org/ ![]() A New Yarn http://www.anewyarn.org/
From their web site: We offer a growing selection of donated and brand name yarns, as well as classes, knitting and crocheting accessories, patterns, and a variety of crafts and gifts. We stock yarn from Cascade, Skacel, Opal, and Dale of Norway. Our stock of donated yarn changes often and spans from today’s fanciest acrylic yarns to gorgeous hand painted skeins of natural fibers. We invite you to visit us, enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and explore our unique yarn shop in North Seattle. The Parks and Green Spaces Levy will be on the ballot this November. Jackson Park Trail Section 7. Broaden the Use of City Golf Courses. The Council requests that the Department add a task to its Strategic Action Plan2009 implementation work program to assess the use of proceeds from the City’s golf course operations to pay for multi-purpose improvements at City golf courses such as perimeter trails. Also, the levy would set aside funds for “opportunity” projects. If we can not find funds for a Jackson Park trail from other sources, we could apply for levy money from the opportunity fund. This is all good news for the Jackson Park Trail project. Northgate Urban Center Park Maple Leaf Park You can read more at the Seattle City Council levy site and at the Seattle Times. |
