Busing to SeaTac

My family and just got back to Seattle after two weeks in the midwest (more on that soon). In planning the trip, we decided to try to make some changes to what we normally do and we took the bus to and from SeaTac. It was actually easier and faster than I thought it might be. We took a 41 to the downtown bus tunnel and transferred to a 194 (you can also take a 174, but I hear the 194 is faster). The bus let us off right at the terminal.

When we returned to Seattle, we went to the same bus stop located outside baggage claim at Bay 2. Again, you can take either a 194 or a 174.

Whether you do it for the green factor or for the cash factor, it makes a difference. I figure that it costs about $27 round trip to drive to SeaTac from Pinehurst (using the newest IRS auto mileage rate of 58.5 cents per mile). A taxi is $50+ each way. The bus, for those without a monthly pass, is $1.50 non-peak per person each way or $1.75 peak per person each way.

Miklos Kohary in the news again

Greg Nickels announced proposed changes today that would require all new townhouse projects to go through design review. His proposal is in response to the enormous outcry from Seattle residents over the blight of ugly townhouses. Read more in the Seattle Times, PI and the SLOG.

In Sharon Chan’s Seattle Times article, she has some great comments from Pinehurst’s most infamous townhouse developer Miklos Kohary:

Miklos Kohary, who built 160 town homes in the city last year, said the mayor’s “insane” proposal would add $30,000 to $40,000 to each home. He now spends that much on loan payments, he said, waiting for building permits to clear with the city, which takes seven to 10 months.

“We were doing what was the objective of the mayor: affordable housing,” Kohary said. “My average buyer ranged from 22, 23 to 35. These were all young people who didn’t want to have a big garden and a house.

“[City officials] either want housing or they don’t. If they want housing, this is insane.”

Wanna be a Pinehurst Blogger?

Fame and fortune awaits you. (Well, maybe recognition by your neighbors…)

Seriously, it would be great to have some more voices on the blog. I have thought it might be interesting to have posts with restaurant reviews and profiles of local businesses and neighbors who are making a difference. I am sure others have many more ideas of what we could do with this blog. Let me know if you are interested in writing for the blog even if it is an occasional post.

7/8 Public Comment Session on Proposed Ban on Styrofoam and ‘Green Fee’ on bags

The Seattle City Council Environment, Emergency Management and Utilities Committee will hear comments from the public on a proposal to ban certain uses of expanded polystyrene (EPS) and impose a 20 cent fee on disposable shopping bags at Seattle’s convenience, drug, and grocery stores.

SPU proposes to use bag fee revenues to partially offset planned rate increases for the City’s recycling and waste disposal services in addition to education, outreach, and assistance to low-income families and small businesses.
