Good Design Tour – Date TBD

Update: 2/4 – We are working to reschedule this for a weekend afternoon so that we will be better able to see the designs we are using as examples. Stay tuned for more information soon.

What is good design? What types of buildings would you like to see in Pinehurst? What design guidelines currently apply to Pinehurst? What is the design review process and when is a developer required to go through design review? What can we as neighbors do to make an impact on the designs of new buildings going up in our neighborhood?

Join your neighbors and members of Pinehurst Planning and Development Group on a tour of some examples of good design. We will meet at 7 PM. We are working out the details and will have more information soon.

If you are interested, contact Renee for more information.

Thank you to Brad Green and Lisa Delude for making this happen!

Neighborhood Street Fund – 2/22 Deadline to Apply

(This is from the Department of Neighborhoods website)

The Department of Neighborhoods is asking community leaders to work with their neighbors to identify and prioritize projects that will inform the City’s Cumulative Reserve Fund (CRF) and Neighborhood Street Fund (NSF) project decisions. This partnership, between the city and its neighborhoods, has been extremely valuable to identifing priority projects by community members. In anticipation of having a $1 million Cumulative Reserve Fund (CRF) and $240,000 Neighborhood Street Fund (NSF) in next year’s city budget, community members are invited to participate in the CRF/NSF Allocation Process that is open from January 14, 2008 until February 22, 2008.

In order to be considered for funding, please completely fill out the application HERE.

Let us help make your application shine!
All questions for SDOT, Parks and Recreation and Department of Neighborhoods regarding the application and process can be answered at the Technical Assistance Workshop; on Thursday, February 7th at the Miller Community Center on Capitol Hill, located at 330 19th Ave. E from 6:00-7:30 pm.

Eligible uses of the Funds:
CRF allocations must be directly linked to an activity identified in a neighborhood plan or a linkage to the neighborhood plan goals, policies, or priorities. Neighborhood Plans can be found online at http://www.seattle.gov/neighborhoods/npi/plans.htm Additionally, CRF funded projects can only be used for maintenance or repairs, projects which address safety issues, or upgrades related to the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) like wheelchair access improvements. CRF cannot be used for new construction.

NSF allocations can be used for transportation-related construction and is not limited to neighborhood plan implementation. Since the NSF budget is smaller ($240,000 anticipated), it should be taken into consideration when deciding the kind of project to put forward, i.e. maintenance versus new construction.

Note: Most of the projects that have been funded in our district (the North District) have been for sidewalks and traffic calming (e.g. traffic circles and speed bomps).

If you have questions, please contact Renee by e-mail or at 206-366-9472. Or, Kadie Bell at Department of Neighborhoods: kadie.bell@seattle.gov and 206-684-0607.

Tips on Making Effective Comments (from DPD)
Although the quantity of letters DPD receives regarding land use activities may indicate the extent of neighborhood or agency interest, it is the relevance of the comments—the information they contain—that will most affect a project’s outcome. Here are some tips on making your comments effective:

  • Briefly explain who you are and why you are interested in the project.
  • State your concerns clearly and succinctly using objective language.
  • Comment only on issues relevant to the decision being made.
  • State opinions and preferences, ask questions, and propose alternative solutions to particular issues. State informed opinions and, where possible, include data to support your opinion.
  • Review the project’s technical reports or Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) data, comment on conclusions, assumptions and the data collecting methods.
  • Keep focused on your objective. You want DPD to hear your concerns and be compelled enough to investigate further.
  • Identify the topics you want to include in your letter and how you want to organize them.
  • Ask for studies that you think are important but have not been provided.
  • If the proposed project is subject to SEPA and you think it will have significant environmental impact, request that an EIS be prepared.
  • Provide your own information.
  • Identify project features that you like and think should not be changed.
  • Provide any comments about the project’s compliance with the Land Use Code.
  • Ask to be added to the project mailing list and request a copy of the notice of decision. (Copies are sent via U.S. mail, so please provide your mailing address when making request.)

War and Piece – Neighbors Up in Arms over "Piecemealing"

Here is an article by Jonah Spangenthal-Lee from this week’s Stranger on piecemealing and on the Kohary project at 125th and Roosevelt: http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/Content?oid=496310

Greg at Smarter Neighbors also has a good and, as always, a witty post on the Kohary discussions in Pinehurst.
