Zillow listing for 5th Ave lot just north of the recent tree clearing area

Here is your chance to save some trees in North Seattle – or at least to develop the lot in a thoughtful manner. Zillow shows a listing for 12331 5th Ave NE, Seattle, WA 98125. The asking price is a mere $250,000 (the tax value is $91,000).

This lot is located just north of the lot that was recently cleared without permission.

Thank you to Rick for this tip.

Seattle Public Schools Capacity Meeting 9/16

Here are some photos from the September 16th Seattle Public Schools Capacity Planning Meeting. There were over 500 parents at this meeting from NE cluster neighborhoods. Meeting slides, handout and additional information is here.

I will do a separate post on some important things I learned from the meeting.

UW School of Urban Planning – Project for Jackson Park Trail

A group of students from the UW School of Urban Planning will be working with the Pinehurst / Jackson Park neighborhood for a class project this quarter. Their project will involve working with the community to do outreach and start discussions on the Jackson Park Trail. I will likely meet with them in the next week or so. If you would like to participate in this (whether a small or larger way – either is good), let me know and I will include you. We are so fortunate to have these students to work with and I think it can be a valuable exercise for all of us.

Update on 5th Ave Trees

Michael Oxman contacted DPD about the tree cutting on 5th Ave NE last weekend. DPD is planing to seek penalties and possible restoration for the trees removed. Here is the DPD response. Thank you to Michael for his efforts on this and for sharing the response with the community.:

Dear Mr. Oxman,

Thank you for notifying the Department of Planning and Development (DPD) of the tree cutting issues at 12301 5th Avenue NE. Although the applicant had a permit application under review for this site, a permit has not been issued. Current regulations prohibit the removal of trees over 6-inches in diameter on undeveloped lots unless a building permit has been issued allowing removal of specific trees.

In coordination with City Arborists, DPD issued a Stop-Work Order on Monday. Unfortunately, it appears many of the trees may have been removed over the weekend. Our enforcement staff will be following up on this issue to prevent this from occurring on the applicant’s adjacent parcels to the north. In addition to the Stop-Work Order, we will be seeking a civil penalty in an amount equal to the appraised value of the trees removed and may require a restoration plan as a result of this action.

If you happen to notice an illegal action such as this in the future, please call our complaint line at 615-0808. DPD enforcement staff are able to respond to these issues expeditiously when notified. Thank you for your continued interest in tree regulations and alerting us of this issue.
