Deforestation on 5th Ave NE

A developer felled a grove of trees along 5th Ave NE near NE 123rd. The site is not pretty at all. They did not have a permit and were told to cease tree removal by the Department of Planning and Development.

Jonah Spangenthal-Lee has more in the SLOG here.

Neighborhood Schools Meeting – Monday, October 13th 7 to 9 PM

Are quality, vibrant, inclusive neighborhood schools important to you? If so, please join us for a community meeting focused on our Pinehurst and Olympic Hills neighborhood schools. Seattle Public Schools Boardmembers Peter Maier and Sherry Carr and Olympic Hills Elementary School Principal Zoe Jenkins will attend. (We are hoping to have representatives for other schools as well and will update this page as we have additional information.)

Monday, October 13th
7 to 9 PM
Olympic Hills School

(13018 20th Ave NE; Seattle, WA 98125)

The focus of this meeting is to connect young families with our neighborhood schools and speak with school board members and school principals to understand what we as a community can do to make a difference in our neighborhood schools.

Right now, many Pinehurst and Olympic Hills neighborhood families choose to send their children to private school or public schools outside of our neighborhood. With a growing population of school-age children in the north end of Seattle, some of the options that families have been relying on may be less available and families will likely begin look to our neighborhood schools such as Olympic Hills Elementary and Northgate Elementary as the schools to send their children to.

Attending our neighborhood schools builds community and encourages walking which is healthy both for our kids and for our environment.

There is a previous blog post on neighborhood schools here.

Please save the date and pass on word to all who may be interested.

Mass Transit Now!

You’re invited!

MASS TRANSIT NOW CAMPAIGN KICKOFF!

Wednesday, September 17th. 6-8:30pm.
Northgate Community Center
10510 5th Ave NESeattle, WA 98125

Click here for map, directions, and public transit options.

This fall, we have the chance to change our transit system – reducing congestion, helping to protect our climate, and linking our communities. Passing Proposition 1 will build light rail and increase bus service, helping our region stay competitive as gas prices continue to rise. But we can only do it with your help!

We don’t have a massive campaign to run glitzy tv commercials. Instead, we’ll rely on a much more powerful medium – people like you, talking to your neighbors and friends, letting them know why this is such an important issue. People want good transit alternatives, but they need to hear from you why this is such a good plan!

So, come, enjoy good food and drink, and learn how to get involved. Working with the campaign doesn’t have to take a lot of time, and there are countless ways to help out. Working together, we can pass Proposition 1 and give people options other than filling their gas tanks and driving alone.

If you can join us Wednesday, please RSVP to Rebecca at Rebecca@masstransitnow.org

We hope to see you there,

Andrew, Rob, Andres, Rebecca, Alex, Josh, James and the rest of the Mass Transit Now Team.

Seattle Public Schools – North End School Capacity Planning Community Meeting

NORTH END SCHOOL CAPACITY PLANNING
Community Meetings Scheduled September 15 and 16

As a result of population growth in some areas of North Seattle, Seattle Public Schools anticipates school capacity issues for north-end elementary schools in the 2009-2010 school year. Seattle Public Schools is in the process of developing alternatives to address these challenges for students who reside or attend schools in the area north of the Ship Canal and in the Queen Anne and Magnolia neighborhoods.

Seattle Public Schools invites families and community members to attend meetings to discuss options for accommodating students for the 2009-2010 school year. The meetings are scheduled to take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, September 15 at Catharine Blaine K-8, located at 2550 34th Ave. W, in the school cafeteria and on Tuesday, September 16 at Roosevelt High School, located at 1410 NE 66th St., in the Commons (also from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.).

There is also a School Board work session on this topic scheduled for Wednesday, October 1 at 4:00 to 5:30 p.m.

While the focus of this initial discussion is the 2009-2010 school year, Seattle Public Schools is working toward a long-term capacity solution.

There is also additional information available on this topic at the Seattle Public Schools website here.

Seattle Proposition 2 – the Parks and Green Spaces Levy

This November, Seattle voters will be asked to consider Seattle Proposition 2 – the Parks and Green Spaces Levy. This levy would replace the ProParks Levy that funded the Pinehurst Pocket Park and other park projects around the city.

If passed, the Parks and Green Spaces Levy would fund a park atop the soon to be lidded Maple Leaf Reservoir, the designed but unfunded Northgate Urban Center Park, playground projects throughout Seattle and much more.

I am supporting this levy for a number of reasons. But the most important may be that as our city grows and becomes denser, it is important to continue to invest in our parks and green spaces to protect our quality of life and provide for an active and healthy lifestyle for all of Seattle. Parks are where we meet our friends and neighbors, where our children play, our senior citizens walk, and our athletes perform. They entice us out of our homes and workplaces.

Investing in our parks for future generations to enjoy — as we have enjoyed the Pinehurst Pocket Park, Pinehurst Playfield, Green Lake and Magnuson Park — is good for our whole community. We need to make similar investments as our legacy for future generations.

This levy is on the ballot because people across Seattle came together to renew the expiring Parks levy. This levy will only pass if we come together and let our friends and neighbors know that we need good parks for all of Seattle.

For more information about this levy, go to www.seattleparksforall.org
