Schools Forum Planned for October

We are working to set a time and location, but we are planning a schools forum for the Pinehurst and Olympic Hills neighborhoods. We have invited Seattle School Board members Peter Maier and Sherry Carr. We also plan to invite principals and PTA reps from Olympic Hills Elementary, Northgate Elementary, Sacajawea Elementary and Alternative School #1.

If you are interested in helping to organize this event, we could definitely use the help. E-mail me to learn more.

Olympic Hills Block Party – A few photos

Dave sent a few photos from the Olympic Hills Block Party (August 5th). If anyone else has some photos to share, please send them on. [I like the second photo a lot – it is Dave’s dog dressed up like Dave. The resemblance is uncanny….]

Safeway Rumors

Not True:

Safeway is planning to have two candy aisles in the new Pinehurst store. (My daughter is telling this to anyone who will listen. Do not believe her if she starts to tell you this at the Pinehurst Summer Social this Saturday. Just smile and nod.)

True:
Safeway has corporate approval to more forward to the next step on redeveloping the Pinehurst store. The next step is for Safeway to respond to the city’s design review feedback from the March 17th design review meeting.

Bumper Stickers

A few folks have been discussing neighborhood branding. What is our image as a neighborhood? If we made bumper stickers, what would they say?

Remember the “Visualize Ballard” stickers from the 90’s? Or, the “Maple Leaf 4 Life” stickers that they give away at Cloud City Coffee?

Here is a call – if we made bumper stickers, what would they say? Add your own ideas to the comments. If we get some good ones, we will make bumper stickers and make them available to the neighborhood.

Lake City School site to be redeveloped into 150 unit apartment complex

Update (8/2/08): This is a Lorig project and the architects are Mithun. I spoke with members of Greater Lake City Community Council and they are very excited about this project. There will be many green elements (it is unclear if Lorig will go for LEED certification) and pedestrian amenities. Lake City core sorely needs good development like what is promised with this.

There is a new development planned at the Lake City School site on 125th.

The proposal is for a five-story, 150 unit apartment building with surface parking and additional parking located within the structure. Existing school building with office uses to remain. Project will require contract rezone. This means that Seattle City Council must approve the rezone in order for the project to proceed.

The Design Review meeting:
Date: Monday, August 18, 2008
Time: 6:30 p.m.
Location: University Height Community Center
5031 University Wy NE
Room 209

Marti Stave (206) 684-0239, is the DPD planner on this project.
Christine Nagamine (206) 971-5688, is the developer contact for the project.

The Land Use Notice is here.

The Lake City School property is currently owned by Seattle Public Schools. (This has been a difficult fact to track down as the King County Property Records show it as owned by the City of Seattle while people associated with the project understand it is owned by Seattle Public Schools.)
